We had a great day of worship on this first day of revival at Salem First Baptist Church, Salem, IL. This morning, I preached from Mark 5.21-43 and this evening, from Mark 2.1-12.
The Mark 5 passage is full of rich meaning and practical application for today. Herein, the Spirit through Mark recounts the narrative of Jesus healing the woman with the flow of blood on his way to heal Jairus' sick little girl. Having two little girls myself, I can imagine what must have been going on in Jairus' heart and mind when he asked Jesus to come and lay His hands on her: desperation and fear, but relief when Jesus agreed, then perhaps impatience as they made their way through the crowds hurrying home to the little girl's bedside.
The woman who had suffered from internal bleeding for twelve years had done everything she could to get treatment and find healing. The text says that she spent all she had, and nothing had worked. She had one last thing she could do--she could reach out and touch Jesus' garment as he passed through the choking crowds on His way to Jairus' house. She did so, and immediately was healed. When Jesus stopped and asked who touched Him, she was terrified. But she did the best thing--she fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth.
Coming to Jesus with that kind of attitude--contrite, dependent, and absolutely truthful--is the way to come to Jesus. We will always find Him ready to accept us and bless us when we come to Him with such a heart and mind.
But while these things were transpiring, servants from Jairus' house came and told him not to bother Jesus any more. His little daughter was dead. I can only imagine the despair, the frustration, the insane feeling of futility that may have nearly overcome Jairus. But Jesus tells him not to be afraid any longer--but only to believe! Just a short time later, the family was sitting down to supper with the little girl alive again!
Jesus came to deliver us from disease and death. Those things came because of the actions of the First Adam. But the Second Adam, Jesus Christ, came to disarm sin and death. Those ubiquitous and all-powerful enemies no longer have any sway over the man, woman, and child who puts their faith in Jesus Christ. "Do not fear. Only believe" (Mark 5.36).
“I want again to breathe your free Air. I expect it will mend my Constitution and confirm my principles. I have indeed as good an Atmosphere at home as the Climate will allow: but have nothing to brag of as to the State and Liberty of my Country. . . . So I [leave you] to pity me and pray for Liberty of Conscience [to revive among us.]”
